Nachtwey: Danger, excitement, adventure

“It was a time of high emotion and great excitement. I really felt that I was witnessing history. And witnessing history not from an academic point of view, not from a distance, but really what happens to people, ordinary people in the course of history. And this was to me the most exciting, the most worthwhile experience, and exactly the kind of experience why I became a photographer. That’s what I wanted to get across.
And there was danger involved in it, and there was also a sense of adventure, in facing danger. Feeling people’s authentic emotions. In a way it was a lot like theatre. But instead of being in the audience I was on the stage, and the script was being written minute by minute as it went along and you had to kind of understand, and anticipate, and connect with it emotionally and intellectually what was going on so that you can follow it.”
