Alec Soth on using a View Camera
I’d never really been fascinated with the view camera. It’s inconvenience, conspicuousness, and expense meant that it’s something I didn’t even think about.
Hearing Soth (who had an excellent blog by the way, too bad he stopped publishing in 2007) talk about the painterly nature of the image has me interested. I can see how this different, far slower process can lead to a different kind of picture.
Shooting on a tripod, with long exposures back in Sydney gave the whole process of photographing a wholly different feel, a different mood altogether. There is some really interesting light at night in Dhaka, I wish I had a tripod here.
