Shooting Notes - 20 July 2009 (with photos)

A disappointing day with no good photos and 4 or 5 acceptable ones out of a total of 224. I had such high hopes for the location too.

  • Motijheel is the financial heart of Dhaka. It’s main street runs east to west so the sun is available for most of the day in large swathes through the streets. Rather than an advantage this turned out to be a problem. When there is too much direct sun it creates a harshness of the skin (and reduces the richness of the colours) which takes out all of the humanity. I want a plastic look, but it needs to be subtle.
  • Focus was off. I don’t know why.
  • It felt like I was noticed more around Motijheel. Perhaps it was the business shirts, and connected environment where people knew each other in the back streets.
  • At one point I got the front, super dangerous, seat at the front of the bus, and there were some really good opportunities for shots of scared pedestrians that the driver was intent on running over.

Why tomorrow will be better

  • At least do 10 minutes of focus and distance work before leaving. It doesn’t have to be for hours. Just a little bit will help.
  • Plan before hand the state of the light. I have a smaller window than I first though. I really need to start working after 2 so that the light is not to harsh.
  • Need to be looking in at more rickshaws. People seem to living a private life when they get into a rickshaw. I’ve gotten some good shots of that, but after more of the head series, I think rickshaws may be the next thing to look at. Much emotion going on inside there.
