- I started editing the Burqa series. It’s something I’ve been putting off because I still wasn’t sure what I wanted to say with it. I put on some music and got into the 600 photos of girls/women in Burqas. I was trying to make it as fun as possible so that I’d actually do it.
- The 1st cut got rid of pictures that were technically unusable, or were just had no aesthetic reason for being there. This got it down to 200 photos. These were rated as 1 stars in Lightroom.
- Had a shower to have a break and then went through them again, with more of a concentration on aesthetic and story judgements being the main determiner for what stayed and what got cut. Interesting, different takes on the burqa thing was prized. Good shots of the eyes, interesting angles, or juxtapositions which said something different stayed. This 2nd cut was rated at 2 stars and I uploaded them to Facebook so that I can hopefully get some feedback from Jas and others.
- The next step is to get down to a set of 20 or so of good story-telling shots. I tend to gravitate to the ones with worried looks, or that has some tension in the frame. As I’ve said earlier. That is easier said than done with burqas and close in work.
- I want at least some mid, and long shots in there, but I don’t have many good ones.
- I have to think about rhythm in making the set. Like a good score, it should grow and recede, rise and fall to create emotion in the viewer.
- I’m not sure whether to go for the square photos for this set or not. It seems to be too constraining. The girls look off to the side, and by cutting off the space from the side there is a feeling of deep claustrophobia. But perhaps that’s what I want.
