Photo Note - OLWA

I was despondent. I thought my musical life was on hold whilst I was in Bangladesh. I thought that until I ran into the OLWA (pronounced Hola!). These bitches rock it. Rapping on the streets of Dhaka they’re super-literate, talking about Marx and Engels and shit. I talked to Rani (pictured) who started telling me about how dnb really went subterranean and hella depressing in the late 90s and so she and the old ladies split into a jungle inspired offshoot. Before the 2 step wave hit and later Dizzee, these guys were doing stuff very reminiscent of what’s now being called funky in London. She said she can’t stand dubstep, she literally can’t stand it, it fucks with her bowls. At first she thought I was from Pitchfork and told me to fuck off. Crushing heavily.

Her last words to me were: ‘Fuck the nursing homes’. Word.
